A Place at the Picnic

At the class picnic, Sam opens a box of hummus sandwiches. Jo has brought rice and beans, and a new classmate, Ari, sits quietly with a lunchbox. “Everyone has something different,” Sam thinks. There is an empty space on the blanket. What could Sam do?

A welcome seat

“Would you like to sit here?” Sam asks. Ari smiles and joins them. Nobody needs to swap food to be included. They talk about their favourite colours and invent names for the clouds. Ari says the smallest cloud looks like a sleeping rabbit.

Everyone gets a turn

Sam asks the group to choose a game that everyone can join. Ari suggests spotting shapes in the clouds. Jo wants to tell a funny story. They take turns so each person gets a choice, then make a story about a rabbit flying through a rainbow.
