🐟 Fish

Quiet swimmers with more feelings than people expect

Fish come in thousands of species living in oceans, rivers, lakes, and ponds, so their lives vary a lot. Many fish, like goldfish and carp, can learn to recognize their owners, remember mazes, and even be trained to push levers for food. Scientists have found that fish can feel pain and stress, and some species show signs of problem-solving and long memories.

Typical lifespan

5–15 years

Years of life with suitable care, not ages at slaughter. These are approximate ranges: breed, health and care matter, and some individuals live longer.

Food and digestion
Diet varies hugely by species; many common pond and pet fish such as goldfish and carp are omnivores eating plants, algae and small invertebrates.
Home and habitat
Fish live in oceans, rivers, lakes and ponds. Pet fish need clean, filtered water of a suitable temperature, enough swimming space and places to explore.
Growing up
A baby fish is called a fry, hatched from an egg. Fry eat tiny food suited to their size before growing into juveniles and adults.

These are learning facts, not feeding instructions. Ask a veterinarian about an individual animal’s needs. Never feed or approach an unfamiliar animal without its caregiver’s permission.

💡 Did you know?

  • Many species can remember things for months, not just a few seconds
  • Some fish use tools, like dropping clams on rocks to crack them open
  • A goldfish's typical adult size depends heavily on its tank or pond size

💛 What this means

In factory farms

Fish farmed for food are often kept in extremely crowded pens, and many wild-caught fish suffocate slowly after being pulled from the water. Because fish can feel pain and stress, crowded, low-oxygen conditions can cause real suffering that's easy to overlook since fish can't make sounds we easily recognize.

Common questions from parents

Can fish really feel pain?
Many scientists believe fish can feel pain and stress based on their nervous systems and behavior. Because fish communicate differently than land animals, their discomfort is easy for people to miss or underestimate.
